look forward

Thank you for all your entries in the Pared Eyewear competition and congratulations to the winner, Miffy!
I'll be in touch soon to arrange your prize.

It's officially the first day of spring on Sunday and I'm looking forward to what will hopefully be a very warm next six months. I love this lookbook shot from Pared's last collection and the stunning Kinga Rajzak for Pop magazine to get me in the mood for summer. Speaking of sunglasses and the new season, it's also time for Badlands to look forward too. I've been meaning to update the blog for a while and I'm very happy to announce to that in a few days time you'll be re-directed to the brand new Badlands, hope you love it!

badlands x sportsgirl

I'm so excited to share with you my campaign for Sportsgirl Australia, The Slashies. It was an honour to be asked alongside fellow creatives Rachel Rutt and Christina Dietze to take part in the campaign which is all about slashie personas. In my case it's graphic artist/blogger (there were more but two is enough!), as part of the launch I'll be instagraming for Sportgirl for the rest of the week as well as doing a series of posts for the blog (first up, my interview) and giving away a one off print as part of their Pinterest competition.

Thank you for having me Sportsgirl!

i love mr mittens

It's always a pleasure to work on a project with Hannah and Rachel. Our latest collaboration involves photographing, designing, illustrating and wording the I Love Mr Mittens campaign, one of my favourite jobs to date! I feel so lucky to get to work with such an amazing team and a beautiful label like Mittens, my Popeye beanie (with a pom pom!) has been keeping me warm in the cold Winter mornings for the past week. Add a warm cup of tea and a cosy blanket and you have the recipe for a perfect weekend.

thinking of fall

I can't believe it's Easter long weekend and that Fashion Week is right around the corner! It's only just starting to get cool but I'm very much set on dressing for Autumn. My BRVTVS bar earrings and cuff arrived and I'm loving them with just a simple grey sweater and denim, maybe paired with that Dress Up trench coat when it's a little colder... As for the Phillip Lim and Carven, a girl can dream, right!?

saint laurent

I had mixed feelings about the Saint Laurent re-brand, but now as the debut collection is arriving in stores Rohan and I are finding ourselves wanting just about everything. For me it's all about the hat, I'm not sure how often I would wear it but I like the idea of it, a lot. The high-top sneakers are Rohan's favourite (Hedi Slimane used to design his favourite shoes for Dior Homme) and we both love lots of black.
I also like that they have kept the original YSL typographic logo alongside the new Saint Laurent one too.

in the studio with satomi kawakita

Last week I visited the studio of New York-based jewellery designer Satomi Kawakita. For my latest Vogue Spy Style post I interviewed Satomi and took a few photos of her workspace and those beautiful rings. Next of my list is the tiny black diamond ring, I can't get enough delicate jewellery. Thankyou for having me Satomi!

the art of giving - new york

Collage and typography by me, words by Hannh-Rose Yee

This year Hannah-Rose Yee from Capture the Castle and I have collaborated again to bring you a two-part Christmas gift guide. I'm in New York for the next two months, and Hannah is soon heading to Paris, so it seemed perfect to theme our guides around two of our favourite cities, Paris and New York. Hope you enjoy! This is part two. Give the gift of New York this Christmas.

one. 3.1 Phillip Lim 'All Eyes on You' sweater, $550 from Saks Fifth Ave

Cool, calm and collected, this sweater is just like New York itself. The kind of thing that tall girls who paint their lips red, baby, red, would throw on as they hopped out of bed (over pilling The Row tee shirts and super-skinny Current Elliot jeans), an outfit that they wouldn't give a second thought to but would be guaranteed to have all eyes on them. Gift this to those girls in your life who might not live in the spotlight, but definitely ought to.

two. Linda Farrow x The Row leather aviators, $350 from Shopbop

Nothing screams bright lights, big city, like a pair of aviator sunglasses, and it doesn't get much bigger than this.  Resplendent in 1970s bronze hue and leather accents, these Linda Farrow x The Row opticals are the kind of thing you always want but can never ask for; bold and brassy sunnies for girls with perfect teeth and Balmain jackets. But we think they look best when paired with sweatshirts and cropped cigarette pants, a slightly off-kilter, atypically New York addition to an outfit. Wherever the receiver finds themselves - stretched out on a beach in Parsley Bay or huddled around a heater in Cobble Hill - these sunglasses are sure to become their daily routine.

three. Alexander Wang 'Trigone' compact wallet, $295 from Barneys New York

Isn't it grand when worlds collide? Pony hair and leather, slim silhouettes and in-your-face-leopard print, New York and Paris. Alexander Wang, the quintessentially New York designer, he of the white tee shirt and the black jean, has been picked to helm Balenciaga in Paris, and thus our two favourite cities are joined in the middle. Just like this wallet. It has a touch of chic to it; that efficient, pared back design (just five card slots and a single space for bills, money is so passe), that matte-black hardware, that perfectly composed shape. But then it's all New York, all the time, chilli and avocado at Cafe Gitane with that leopard print pony hair leather. The perfect match.

four. Le Labo 'Tubereuse 40' fragrance, POA from Le Labo

Everyone has their own idea of what New York smells like. Joan Didion thought it was garbage and peaches, Tom Hanks - or at least Tom Hanks in Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail - preferred sharpened pencils and school supplies. Us, on the otherhand, being rather partial to peonies and white florals and tubereuse, tubereuse, tubereuse, elect for this. Created specifically to capture the scent of New York - and available exclusively in New York alone - this is one for the die-hard New Yawk lovers, the ones who never get lost in the subway and don't even get phased when they stand at the top of the Rock and look down over Manhattan. One spritz is all it takes.

five. Satomi Kawakita ring, from $100 from Satomi Kawakita

This is for the girl who has everything. She's got a wardrobe full of Acne and Opening Ceremony, eats out for every meal and knows exactly what she wants. They're hard to buy for, those girls. But no-one, not even a hard-at-heart New Yorker, can resist something shiny on Christmas day. Your best bet is to go for Satomi Kawakita; Japanese-born, New York-based jewellery famed for her organic designs and delicate settings. Choose something simple but with a kick - like this beautiful circlet of gold, twisted in the shape of a twig - that she'll slip onto her finger and never take off.

six. Proenza Schouler 'PS11' classic satchel, $1950 from Proenza Schouler

If we were to receive this we'd feel very lucky indeed. The ultimate New York bag - famously tested by the Olsen twins and Kate Bosworth - equal parts swagger and equal parts nonchalance. The original satchel is great, but this is the next level, modern and graphic (that art deco clasp!) in that beautiful pebbled leather with a strap long enough to cross your body.

seven. Araks 'Kate' pyjama top, $139 from Araks

New York is decadence. It's degustation meals and horse and carriage rides around Central Park and pyjamas in the day time. Start someone's collection by gifting them this spotty silk shirt by cult-favourite New York label Araks. Try walking it in on Christmas morning wrapped up with a big grosgrain ribbon on a breakfast tray - alongside some toasted muesli and fresh orange juice. It's all about the decadence.

egyptian magic

The latest collection from Melbourne-based jewellery designer Estelle Dévé, Egyptian Magic.

I have been thinking a lot about jewellery lately, and the fact that I don't wear/own a lot of it - my usual collection consists of a few simple rings, my watch and a delicate gold bracelet. Then I saw Estelle's latest lookbook; I love that the shapes are organic yet structured and while they are more statement pieces than I am used to wearing, there is still a strong sense of elegance and refinement. Above are just a few of the pieces I'm dreaming about, the Akhenaten necklace, Giza earrings and Nuri bracelet (decisions!), and I'm delighted to share with you this interview. Thanks Estelle!

You grew up in France, tell us a little about your childhood and why you moved to Australia?

I grew up in a teeny tiny village in south of France. My brother and I were the only kids there so we pretty much spent our whole time together, playing in the forest, creating our whole little world that only we understood; building cubby houses (including one that had two levels which we were particularly proud of), and doing "excavations". There was this ditch outside the village that used to be a tip in the 1800s and I don't know how many hours we spent there digging holes and finding pieces of ceramic, crystal bottle tops and even a gold ring! I was outdoors and probably covered in dirt 90% of the time and the other 10% I'd come home and look at fashion magazines and draw clothes that my great grandma would then make for me.
It was a pretty amazing thing to grow up there, however I had always been fascinated by other countries and culture and I knew from a very young age that as soon as I could I'd move overseas.
I moved to the U.K when I turned 18, and when I had the opportunity to finish my last year of uni in Australia, I didn't even think about it twice. That was 7 years ago, I guess I fell in love with the country, the way of life here..

When did you know you wanted to be a jewellery designer?

I'm not quite sure to be completely honest. My dad had a jewellery label with my aunt when I was very little and I remember going there and playing with pearls and beads and making little necklaces and things. I guess it's always something I had an interest in, but I also think I wasn't aware of it. Growing up it was never a career path I had considered. I was very academic and the idea of doing a job that was "fun" didn't even cross my mind. I went to business school and worked in a few fashion related job once I graduated and I soon became very bored. A few in my friends in Sydney had jewellery labels at the time and I used to go to their studio and help out until the day my friend asked why I didn't want to do this as a job. I had no real reason why I shouldn't, so I just tried my luck. 4 years later, here I am. Funnily enough, I was the one the most surprised: when I told my parents they just told me "that makes sense"..

What are the processes you go through when designing a collection?

Mmm, the whole design process is still a mystery to me. Every season I start with a very precise idea of what I want the theme to be, and in the end, I do something completely different. Every single time.
I usually start drawing a lot, sometimes getting to the point of having drawn several precise pieces and usually I hit a point where I am not 100% satisfied with this and I have to start all over again. For some reason, I am completely unable to figure out what it is that I really want until I have figured out what it is that I don't want :)

Once I get to this stage, I usually read books, look at movies and images and try to free myself from work, empty my brain out, and eventually something comes out. Strangely, a lot of ideas I dream of. For some reason I find it much easier to picture things with my eyes closed.

Figuring out the ideas, making sure that they are exactly what i want, is generally the hardest part. Once that's done it's 75% of the work done!
Then I put the ideas in practice, either designing them by hand, either working in CAD and printing them in 3D, then cast in metal. Once they're all cast and plated, I assemble everything by hand in my studio. And.. Voila!

I love anything Ancient Egyptian - I found the collection at the Louvre in Paris very inspiring. Tell us about the influences behind Egyptian Magic…

Ancient Egypt is something that has always fascinated me. Last year my little brother moved there for work and coincidentally I started reading all these books about their mythology and amulets so designing a collection in relation with all of this only seemed natural.
I do love the collection at Le Louvre also, it's amazing! Poor boyfriend, I must have dragged him to every single museum that had a Egyptian collection while we were in Europe last year.. :) I've always thought that if design didn't work I'd go back to uni to study Egyptology..

Tell us about your personal style… are there any particular designers or icons who inspire you

I'm not quite sure how to describe my personal style except from the fact that I'm very very picky! I have all those rules that only make sense to me, which makes it a complete nightmare for either me to find things or for others to buy me presents..
Whatever it is I'm all about texture. the fabrics used are very important to me. I like my clothes to feel special, to have some kind work in the cut, fabric, or in the details that makes me justify it's purchase.
Designer wise, I love Dries Van Noten for his beautiful fabrics, Balenciaga for the most amazing cuts and Christopher Kane for surprising me every single season and development the most amazing new technologies. And of course, if I had all the money in the world, I'd go to Celine, like everyone else, for the most beautiful basics in the world.

What's next for Estelle Deve?

The future will tell I guess.. But I would really like to collaborate with a clothes designer next season. Just putting the word out! :)

on a throne in the sky

One of my favourite things about this time of year is the Fall issues of all my favourite bi-annual magazines coming out, and also finishing up uni for the semester. This week marks the last of classes (with exams and presentations still to follow) but it is also the half-way point of my degree, pretty exciting!

So today, alongside finishing a few projects, I'm taking some time out to read, burn my favourite candles and maybe even do some baking.

how to hit the ground running

This is a bit of a belated post - It's a fantastic little flight kit from Mr Porter & Aesop that Talisa got me for my birthday this year. It came in a cool black case, with an little guide filled with Angelo Trofa's illustrations. I love it. Thanks T!

maximillia

Rohan and I just finished working on the re-brand from online store Maximillia.

The collage on the home page will be updated monthly according to new collections. First up is Karen Walker's Sea Monsters, the Jules Verne tribute which sees models with navy nail polish and matching angora sweaters play around with gold brocade and Victorian prints.

a day in the office

I'm not sure how I missed these photos of Gaia Repossi in her office, but they're making my longing for a studio even greater. I would love a big, long desk with draws so I can store all of my drawings flat, high ceilings, white brick walls and a variety of colourful drop sheets for taking photos.

One of my favourite films for studio inspiration is Antonioni's Blow Up (1966). The colour use in the film is beautiful and it stars David Hemmings, Jane Birkin, Vanessa Redgrave and Veruschka. What's not to love?
